About ECCO
Karl and Birte Toosbuy founded ECCO in Bredebro, Denmark, in 1963. From those beginnings, the company developed into an international footwear brand while keeping a recognisably Scandinavian approach to design — clean lines, practical shapes and very little unnecessary detail.
One thing that sets ECCO apart is how closely it remains involved in making its shoes. The company operates its own tanneries as well as shoe factories, allowing leather, construction and fit to be developed with the finished shoe in mind.
That approach comes through in the styles we stock at 121 Shoes. ECCO works particularly well for customers who want comfortable footwear without an overtly sporty or technical appearance. A leather trainer can handle the commute and a weekend away; a simple casual shoe can work just as easily with jeans as with smarter trousers.
We select ECCO styles with that everyday usefulness in mind: comfortable, straightforward footwear designed to be worn regularly rather than kept for a particular occasion.
Why Choose ECCO
ECCO earns its place in our range through a strong focus on comfort, fit and materials. Its walking shoes are a good example: cushioning helps on longer days, while flexible soles allow the foot to move without giving the shoe a heavy, technical feel.
Many ECCO styles use FLUIDFORM™ Direct Comfort Technology, where the sole material is moulded directly around the anatomical shape of the foot and bonded to the upper. The result is a flexible base with cushioning built into the construction of the shoe.
ECCO's leather is another important part of the brand. Because the company operates its own tanneries, leather development stays closely connected to how the finished footwear is designed and made. That helps explain the soft, refined feel found across many of its leather trainers, casual shoes and smarter styles.
Weather protection is also available where it matters. Selected ECCO waterproof shoes use waterproof constructions or GORE-TEX, making them a useful option for wet commutes, weekend walks and the unpredictable showers that are part of everyday life in the UK.
Across the range, ECCO tends to keep styling understated. A pair can feel comfortable enough for a day on your feet without looking like specialist outdoor footwear, which makes the brand easy to wear across work, travel and weekends.
ECCO Shoes Buying Guide
Different ECCO styles suit different parts of the week. Trainers work well for everyday wear and travel, boots add more coverage in colder or wetter months, sandals suit warmer weather, and golf shoes are built specifically for time on the course.
Think about what your day actually looks like
For commuting, city breaks or days spent moving between work, shops and errands, ECCO trainers are often the easiest place to begin. They give you cushioning and flexibility while still working with everyday clothing rather than looking like performance footwear.
If walking is a bigger part of the day, pay closer attention to how the shoe feels once you start moving. ECCO BIOM styles are designed around more natural foot movement and may suit people who prefer a closer, more active feel underfoot.
For warmer weather, ECCO sandals cover everything from relaxed summer wear to holiday walking. Golfers can go directly to ECCO golf shoes , where grip, stability and walking comfort matter more than they do in a standard casual shoe.
Choose the shape you are most likely to wear
ECCO boots are useful when you want more coverage for autumn and winter, whether that means the school run, commuting in the rain or simply wearing heavier trousers and knitwear.
Trainers remain the more relaxed option, while loafers and simple leather lace-ups work better when the dress code is smarter.
If you already know an ECCO collection you like, use that as a shortcut. ECCO Soft 7, for example, is known for understated casual styles with a clean Scandinavian look, so returning customers may prefer to begin there rather than browse the entire range.
Let one useful feature narrow the choice
If wet weather is the main concern, start with ECCO waterproof shoes and then check the individual product description for waterproof construction or GORE-TEX. That is particularly relevant for regular commuting, dog walks and weekends when the forecast is less than reliable.
Material can make the choice easier too. ECCO leather shoes offer a neater finish and work across both casual and smarter outfits, while nubuck gives selected styles a softer, more relaxed appearance.
Fit should be considered alongside how you plan to wear the shoes. Lace-ups allow more adjustment around the foot, while slip-on styles are quicker for everyday use. If you expect to spend several hours walking or standing, cushioning, flexibility and a secure fit are likely to matter more than decorative details.
ECCO SHOES FAQ
Why do ECCO shoes cost more than average trainers?
With ECCO shoes, more of the value sits in how the shoe is made, not simply in the branding. ECCO runs its own tanneries and shoe factories, and technologies such as FLUIDFORM™ build comfort into the shape and construction of the shoe rather than treating it as an add-on.
If that makes them a pair you reach for several days a week, the higher upfront price starts to make much more sense on a cost-per-wear basis.
Can ECCO leather shoes be resoled when the soles eventually wear out?
It depends on the style and construction. Many ECCO shoes use FLUIDFORM™ or direct-injected construction, where the sole is bonded directly to the upper rather than attached using traditional stitched construction. This means resoling may not be as straightforward as it is with some traditionally constructed leather shoes.
ECCO does not currently offer its own repair or refurbishment service in some markets, so if the sole is worn, it is best to ask an experienced shoe repairer to assess the specific pair before deciding whether repair or resoling is possible.
Are all ECCO leather shoes waterproof for British weather?
No. ECCO leather shoes are not automatically waterproof simply because they are made from leather. Natural leather can take on moisture, so regular protection helps with everyday British weather.
If dependable wet-weather protection matters to you, explore our range of ECCO waterproof shoes and look for styles specifically marked waterproof or fitted with GORE-TEX. That way, you are choosing weather protection by design rather than hoping an ordinary leather shoe will do the same job.
AWhere is ECCO from and where are ECCO shoes made?
ECCO is a Danish brand, founded in Bredebro in 1963. Although its roots are in Denmark, ECCO shoes are now made in company-operated factories across Europe and Asia. ECCO remains unusually close to the whole process, from developing leather in its own tanneries to making the finished footwear in its own factories.
Are ECCO shoes comfortable?
Comfort is one of the things ECCO is best known for, but it goes beyond simply adding a soft insole. Many ECCO shoes are built on anatomical lasts that follow the natural shape of the foot, with FLUIDFORM™ soles designed to provide cushioning, support and flexibility as you move. The result is the sort of comfort that matters after hours on your feet, not just during the first few minutes of trying a pair on.
How can you tell if ECCO shoes are genuine?
The safest check starts with where you buy them. ECCO advises shoppers to be cautious of suspicious websites with poor contact information, unusual web addresses, broken links or unrealistic bulk discounts. At 121 Shoes, we are an authorised ECCO retailer and the ECCO products we sell are stated as 100% genuine, so you can shop without having to second-guess the source of your shoes.
