The Brand History of SUPERGA

Origins in 1911

SUPERGA has its roots in 1911, in Turin, Italy. Walter Martiny, the founder, introduced the vulcanisation technique of natural rubber to Italy. He established the Walter Martiny rubber factory, naming it after the “Basilica of Superga”. This marked the humble beginnings of what would become a renowned footwear brand, with a focus on utilising innovative rubber-related technologies in shoe-making.

The Birth of the Prototype in 1925

In 1925, SUPERGA introduced the prototype of its first vulcanised shoe, the “2750”. This design was inspired by Walter Martiny’s wife, who was an avid tennis player. The “2750” combined style and functionality, setting a precedent for the brand’s future offerings. Its design incorporated elements that catered to both the needs of active individuals and those with an eye for fashion, starting a trend of creating shoes that were not only practical but also stylish.

The Creation of the Logo in 1962

In 1962, the Italian graphic designer Albe Steiner crafted the new SUPERGA logo. The Rise in the Sports Field in the 1970s

During the 1970s, SUPERGA launched the Sport series. The “swallow-tail mark” became its representative symbol. This series attracted numerous famous Italian athletes as users. By associating with the sports community, SUPERGA was able to establish itself firmly in the sports-footwear domain. The Sport series was designed with performance in mind, utilising advanced materials and construction techniques to meet the demands of athletes, while still maintaining the brand’s stylish aesthetic.

Expansion and Collaborations from 2007

In 2007, SUPERGA joined the Basicnet Group. This partnership opened up new opportunities for the brand. Subsequently, it collaborated with prestigious fashion houses such as Versus, Fendi, and Swarovski, launching co-branded collections. These collaborations brought together the unique design sensibilities of SUPERGA with the luxury and high-end fashion elements of these renowned brands, resulting in exclusive and highly sought-after products that appealed to a wider range of consumers.

The Title of “The National Footwear of Italy” in 2011

In 2011, during the 150th anniversary celebration of the unification of Italy, SUPERGA was bestowed with the title of “The National Footwear of Italy”. This recognition was a testament to the brand’s long-standing presence in the country, its contribution to the Italian footwear industry, and its ability to resonate with the Italian people.
